## Tax on investments, inheritance and wealth

No personal income tax, no capital gains tax, no tax on dividends or interest, no wealth tax and no inheritance or estate tax. No general corporate tax (46% on oil and gas; 15% DMTT for MNE groups with EUR 750m+ revenue from 2025). VAT 10%. Real estate transfers carry 2% stamp duty (1.7% if paid within two months). About 50 treaties, none with the US.

- **Bahrain tax residence**: No personal taxes on income, gains, wealth or estates.

## Income tax

Bahrain has no personal income tax (PwC, reviewed 26 Jul 2026). Employees in Bahrain contribute to the Social Insurance Organisation: expatriates pay 1% (employer 3%), Bahrainis 8% (employer 18%). Income paid outside Bahrain is not subject to Bahraini tax or social insurance rules.

## How to get residence

No free movement for anyone; EU, US and other passports use the same Golden Residency categories (Resolution 20 of 2022): property (BHD 130,000 since the NPRA announcement of 26 November 2025, still BHD 200,000 on the portal page), employees with 5 years' residence and BHD 2,000 salary, retirees, and talented individuals. No remote-work visa was found. Citizenship is not realistically open.

- **Golden Residency - property owners** (Investor residence; EU citizens, US citizens, other passports; open): Own Bahraini property worth at least BHD 130,000 and get a 10-year renewable residence without a sponsor.
- **Golden Residency - employees living in Bahrain** (Other; EU citizens, US citizens, other passports; open): Residents with 5 years in Bahrain and a salary of at least BHD 2,000 a month can switch to a 10-year Golden Residency.
- **Golden Residency - retirees** (Passive income / retirement; EU citizens, US citizens, other passports; open): Retirees with a pension of BHD 2,000 a month (resident) or BHD 4,000 a month (living abroad) can get Golden Residency.
- **Golden Residency - highly talented individuals** (Other; EU citizens, US citizens, other passports; open): A 10-year residency for people with a recognised talent certificate in academic, sporting, entrepreneurial, artistic or literary fields.
- **Employer-sponsored work residence** (Work; EU citizens, US citizens, other passports; open): Most expatriates live in Bahrain on a work permit and residence permit through an employer (LMRA/NPRA); companies can be 100% foreign owned in most sectors.

Citizenship: Not researched from the Bahraini Nationality Law in this pass. Golden Residency does not lead to citizenship.

## Inheritance law and trusts

Muslims are governed by Sharia, which guarantees fixed shares; the Constitution (art. 5(d)) makes inheritance a right governed by Islamic Sharia. Non-Muslim foreigners are governed by the law of their own country under Legislative Decree 11 of 1971. Bahrain has a trust law, but the sources found do not settle foundations.

### Bahrain — family-office tax dossier

Last reviewed: 2026-10-15
Tax year: 2026

#### Summary

No personal income tax, no capital gains tax, no tax on dividends or interest, no wealth tax and no inheritance or estate tax. No general corporate tax (46% on oil and gas; 15% DMTT for MNE groups with EUR 750m+ revenue from 2025). VAT 10%. Real estate transfers carry 2% stamp duty (1.7% if paid within two months). About 50 treaties, none with the US.

#### Residence and eligibility

No personal income tax, so tax residence is not defined for PIT purposes (PwC). Treaty residence certificates are issued by the National Bureau for Revenue (procedure not verified).

- **Golden Residency (property or wealth)** (EU, US, OTHER): 10-year renewable residency for property owners and holders of substantial assets; thresholds (commonly reported as BHD 200,000 property) could not be verified because the official NPRA page was unreachable.
- **Employment / investor residence** (EU, US, OTHER): Residence permit via an employer or a Bahraini company (100% foreign ownership allowed in most sectors; not verified here).

#### Capital gains

No capital gains tax for individuals on any asset.

- **Rate basis:** No PIT regime (PwC); no general taxes on income, sales, capital gains or estates (PwC corporate).
- **Professional trader:** No risk: there is no income tax on individuals or general corporate tax.
- **Foreign assets:** Not taxed.
- **Important exceptions:** Real estate transfers bear 2% stamp duty (1.7% if paid within two months), a transaction cost rather than a gains tax.
- **Confidence:** high (partially_verified), verified 2026-10-15.
- **JSON numbers:** headline 0.0; listed domestic 0.0, listed foreign 0.0, private business 0.0, local real estate 0.0, foreign real estate 0.0.

#### Dividends

No tax on dividends.

- **Rate basis:** No PIT regime; income not paid in Bahrain is outside local tax.
- **Outbound WHT:** No WHT on dividends, interest or royalties.
- **Treaty network:** About 50 treaties in force (PwC); no treaty with the United States, so US dividends held directly bear 30% US WHT.
- **Confidence:** high (partially_verified), verified 2026-10-15.
- **JSON numbers:** domestic 0.0, foreign gross 0.0, credit method `not_applicable`.

#### Inheritance and gifts to children

No inheritance, estate or gift tax.

- **Gift tax:** None.
- **Foreign assets:** No tax on any asset.
- **Domicile rules:** Not relevant for tax.
- **Thresholds:** No tax, so no thresholds.
- **Important exceptions:** Succession, not tax, is the issue: personal status (family) law based on Sharia governs inheritance of Muslims, with fixed shares (a son typically takes twice a daughter's share) and at most one third freely disposable by will to non-heirs. How estates of non-Muslim foreigners are handled (home-country law, own religious rules, or Sharia by default) was not verified for this country; non-Muslim families should take local legal advice and hold portfolio assets outside the country or through a structure with a clear governing law.
- **Confidence:** high (partially_verified), verified 2026-10-15.
- **JSON numbers:** basis `none`, children `fully_exempt`, exemption 0, brackets none, other transfer cost 0.0.

#### Wealth tax

No net wealth tax.

- **Property taxes:** No general property tax. A 10% municipality tax applies to rent on property let to expatriates (paid by the owner); this is a rental levy, not a wealth tax.
- **Confidence:** high (partially_verified), verified 2026-10-15.
- **JSON:** type `none`.

#### Special regimes

None. Every resident is taxed the same way; no special regime is needed because the standard position is already nil (see Open questions for announced changes).

#### Company taxation (kept separate from personal tax)

No general corporate income tax. 46% tax on oil and gas profits. 15% Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax for MNE groups with EUR 750m+ consolidated revenue, financial years from 1 January 2025. No WHT on dividends, interest or royalties. VAT 10%.
